Structured Cabling
CAT6 vs CAT6A: Which Should Indianapolis Businesses Choose?
When Indianapolis businesses plan a new office build-out, a network refresh, or a facility expansion, one of the first questions we hear is: "Should we go with CAT6 or CAT6A?" It's a fair question — and the answer depends on what your facility actually needs, not just what sounds most impressive on a spec sheet.
After 25+ years of installing structured cabling throughout Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, and the surrounding Central Indiana region, we've seen both cable types perform exactly as designed — and we've seen businesses overspend on CAT6A where CAT6 would have been perfectly sufficient, and underspend on CAT6 where CAT6A was clearly the right call. Here's what you actually need to know.
The Core Difference: Distance and Shielding
Both CAT6 and CAT6A support 10 Gbps data transfer speeds — that's the headline spec you'll see on both. The critical difference is how far they can sustain that speed:
CAT6A also has significantly better shielding against alien crosstalk (AXT) — interference from adjacent cables running in parallel. In high-density cable environments like data centers, healthcare facilities, or large open-plan offices with hundreds of runs, this matters a great deal.
When CAT6 Is the Right Choice for Indianapolis Businesses
CAT6 is the workhorse of modern commercial cabling — and for most Indianapolis small and mid-size offices, it's exactly what you need. Consider CAT6 when:
- Your cable runs are under 55 meters from the IDF/MDF to the workstation (most single-floor offices qualify)
- You're running standard office workloads — VoIP, file sharing, cloud apps, video conferencing
- Budget is a priority and you want to maximize the number of drops installed
- You're in a low-density environment where cable bundles are small and crosstalk is minimal
CAT6 is typically 15–25% less expensive per drop than CAT6A when you factor in cable, connectors, patch panels, and labor. For a 50-drop office installation in Indianapolis, that difference adds up quickly.
When CAT6A Is Worth the Investment
CAT6A earns its premium in specific environments. We recommend it when:
- You're building or upgrading a data center or server room — 10 Gbps at full run length is non-negotiable
- Your facility is healthcare, manufacturing, or industrial — environments with high EMI interference benefit from CAT6A's superior shielding
- Cable runs exceed 55 meters — common in warehouses, multi-floor buildings, and campus environments
- You're planning for PoE++ (Power over Ethernet) devices — high-wattage PoE runs cooler and more efficiently over CAT6A
- You want a future-proof infrastructure that won't need to be replaced when 10 Gbps to the desktop becomes standard
The Physical Reality: CAT6A Is Bigger and Heavier
One thing spec sheets don't tell you: CAT6A cable is physically larger — typically 7–8mm in diameter versus 5–6mm for CAT6. In a retrofit or renovation project, this matters. Conduit that was sized for CAT6 may not accommodate the same number of CAT6A runs. Tighter bend radius requirements and heavier weight also affect how the cable is routed and supported.
This is why a proper site survey before installation matters. Our team assesses your existing conduit, cable trays, and pathways before recommending a cable type — not after.
Our Recommendation for Most Indianapolis Businesses
For a typical Indianapolis office environment — 10 to 100 workstations, standard business applications, single-floor or multi-floor with reasonable run lengths — CAT6 is the right choice. It's certified, it's proven, and it will handle your network demands for the next decade without issue.
If you're building a data center, running a healthcare facility, managing a warehouse with long cable runs, or deploying high-density PoE devices — CAT6A is worth every penny of the premium.
