Buyer's Guide
How to Choose a Low-Voltage Cabling Contractor in Indianapolis
Hiring the wrong cabling contractor can cost you far more than the original job. Poorly terminated cables, uncertified runs, and sloppy documentation create problems that show up months or years later — often at the worst possible time. Here's what to look for when choosing a low-voltage contractor in Indianapolis.
Look for Certified Technicians
The most important credential in the structured cabling industry is BICSI certification. BICSI (Building Industry Consulting Service International) sets the standards for cabling installation, and their certifications — RCDD, Installer 1, Installer 2 — indicate a technician who has been trained and tested to industry standards. Ask any contractor you're considering whether their technicians hold current BICSI credentials. If they can't answer that question clearly, keep looking.
Ask About Cable Testing and Certification
There's a difference between a contractor who installs cable and one who certifies it. A certified installation means every run has been tested with a cable certifier — a piece of equipment that verifies the cable meets the performance standard it's rated for (CAT6, CAT6A, etc.). Without certification testing, you have no way of knowing whether your cabling will actually perform at the speeds you're paying for. Ask for test reports. A reputable contractor will provide them as a matter of course.
Check Their Experience With Your Type of Project
Low-voltage work covers a wide range: structured cabling, fiber optics, wireless infrastructure, security cameras, paging systems, access control. Not every contractor has deep experience in all of these areas. Ask specifically about projects similar to yours. A contractor who has wired dozens of commercial office buildings in Indianapolis will approach your project differently than one whose background is primarily residential or light commercial.
Verify Their BBB Standing and References
BBB accreditation means the contractor has agreed to ethical business standards and has a track record of resolving customer complaints. Check their BBB rating and read any reviews. Beyond the BBB, ask for references from recent commercial projects in the Indianapolis area. A contractor who has been in business for years should have no trouble providing them.
Get a Detailed, Written Quote
A professional contractor will provide a written quote that itemizes labor, materials, and any other costs. Be wary of vague estimates or contractors who resist putting things in writing. The quote should specify the cable category, the number of drops, the patch panel configuration, and what testing will be performed. If a quote seems unusually low, ask why — cutting corners on cable quality or skipping certification testing are common ways to reduce costs, and common sources of problems down the road.
Ask About Ongoing Support
Your cabling infrastructure will need to grow and change as your business does. A contractor who provides ongoing support — moves, adds, changes, and troubleshooting — is more valuable than one who installs and disappears. Ask whether they offer service agreements or are available for follow-up work.
